Regulations

The Singapore Jewellery Design Awards have a number of categories to ensure fair competition between artisans with different experience levels and backgrounds.

Jewellery Without Limits

Providing maximum flexibility for designers of any age and background, including active jewellery professionals.

Eligibility:
Open to all

Manufacturing: 
Submissions may be concepts or finished pieces that have been produced

Maximum Submissions:
Three per participant

COMPETITION REQUIREMENT

All designs must be grounded in producible techniques and real-world natural gem-quality materials. Designs should utilise gold and may be a single piece or a collection. 

ELIGIBILITY
The ‘Jewellery Without Limits’ Category of the SJDA is open to jewellers, jewellery designers and persons involved in or studying the design and manufacture of precious jewellery or relevant creative discipline such as textile design, graphic design, fashion design, etc.

TARGET RETAIL SELLING PRICE
Jewellery pieces submitted in this category should be sold for no more than USD$12,000
Your selection of materials should reflect this cap and general target price.

MATERIALS

There is no limitation to the jewellery type but it should be a wearable item.  

  • Pendants, necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets, anklets, brooches or any other creative thinking is encouraged. 
  • Designs selected for manufacturing will be crafted in 18K gold by the sponsor. 
  • Entrants are encouraged to incorporate various materials into their designs, including diamonds, coloured gemstones, pearls, and jade. However, the use of lab-grown or synthetic gemstones is strictly prohibited. 
  • Ergonomic factors must be prioritised to ensure comfort and wearability.  
  • Designs may use Cabochon or Faceted Gemstones of standard cuts that are easily commercially available.  
  • Submitted designs may incorporate entrants’ own unique gemstone cuts, natural materials, or specialised techniques, such as Plique-à-jour enamel, if they plan to manufacture their own design. The entrant or designated manufacturer engaged by the entrant must possess the necessary expertise to ensure the design meets the production timeline if selected to be exhibited.

*Please note that as the manufacturing sponsors, we will not be remanufacturing the selected piece if it has already been produced by the designer. For jewellery pieces already produced, Silver with plating may be accepted. 

CRITERIA

In this category entrants are encouraged to take into consideration:

Manufacturing Practicality

Judges will evaluate: 

  • Practicality, wearability, and aesthetics of each design, focusing on its manufacturability based on the submitted specifications.   
  • As mentioned, ergonomic factors, specifically weight and size, must be considered.  
  • Designs (not produced), should ideally include clear representations from multiple angles, with precise measurements. 
  • Any selected design for manufacturing that lacks clear measurements, specifies unclear or over-budget materials, or does not provide comprehensive views may be adjusted by the manufacturing sponsors at their discretion to align with the production timeline and budget.

*If entrants with a fully produced piece are selected for the final round, they will be required to submit the physical design. 

Documentation

Participants must provide a clear explanation of their final design, including the inspirations, concepts, and rationale behind material choices or substitutes. Keep in mind that the manufacturing sponsors will determine the best materials if the design is selected for production. The documentation should assist judges in evaluating the submission and must be limited to 200 words. 

Commercial viability
Designs in this category are expected to embody exceptional design quality and finesse, showcasing unique, one-of-a-kind bespoke creations that have not been produced or seen in the market. Designs should avoid resembling fast fashion jewellery, distinctive styles and/or iconic elements from renowned fashion and luxury brands and not infringe upon any existing copyrights or trademarks.

Fresh Facets

Nurturing design students and new entrants to the jewellery industry with less than 5 years of professional experience.

Eligibility:
Open Students and New Entrants

Manufacturing:
Submissions should be concepts in multiple views with a view to manufacture.

Maximum Submissions:
Three per participant

COMPETITION REQUIREMENT

All designs for this category must incorporate ONLY Natural Colourless Diamonds in standard cuts, use 18k Gold and cannot include more than 2cts of diamonds in total.

ELIGIBILITY

The ‘Fresh Facets’ Category of the SJDA is open to students, amateurs and new entrants to the jewellery industry. ‘New entrants’ is defined as individuals who have not been involved in commercial (for profit) activity for a period of longer than 5 years.

TARGET RETAIL SELLING PRICE

Jewellery pieces submitted in this category should be sold for no more than USD$2500
Your selection of materials should reflect this cap and general target price.

MATERIALS

There is no limitation to the jewellery type but it should be a wearable item. Pendants, necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets or any other creative thinking is encouraged. 

  • Entrants should only incorporate natural diamond/s into their designs.
  • Designs selected for manufacturing will be crafted in 18K gold by the sponsor.
  • Ergonomic factors must be prioritised to ensure comfort and wearability
  • Submitted designs may incorporate entrants’ own unique natural diamond cuts, natural materials, or specialised techniques, such as Plique-à-jour enamel, if they plan to manufacture their own design. The entrant or designated manufacturer engaged by the entrant must possess the necessary expertise to ensure the design meets the production timeline if selected to be exhibited.

This category allows for a lower budget and will need to show innovative reproducible design at affordable price ranges.

Essence of Gold

Master the art of minimalism and structure. Focus on creating a cohesive collection of hollow-form, lightweight gold pieces that emphasize superior manufacturability and elegant simplicity, proving the profound beauty of refined form.

Eligibility:
Open to All

Manufacturing:
Submissions should be concepts in multiple views with a view to manufacture.

Maximum Submissions:
Three per participant

COMPETITION REQUIREMENT

All designs for this category must be in 916 Gold ONLY (No Gems.) And must consist of a collection of 4 pieces: Necklace, Bracelet, Ring and Earrings, with total weight of under <50 grams of gold.

ELIGIBILITY

The ‘Essense of Gold’ Category of the SJDA is open to jewellers, jewellery designers and persons involved in or studying the design and manufacture of precious jewellery or relevant creative discipline such as textile design, graphic design, fashion design, etc.

MATERIALS

Jewellery types should be restricted to sets of necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings only. 

  • Entrants should only incorporate 916 gold into their designs.
  • Ergonomic factors must be prioritised to ensure comfort and wearability

*Please note that for designs that have already been manufactured, the manufacturer may choose to
remanufacture the design for sale.

 

CRITERIA

In this category entrants are encouraged to take into consideration:

Exquisite AI

Exploring the future of design using generative AI tools to find inspiration.

Eligibility:
Open to anyone using AI technologies

Special considerations:
Submissions must include detailed information about models, prompts, trainings sets, technologies or processes used.

Maximum Submissions:
Three per participant

ELIGIBILITY 
The ‘Exquisite AI’ category of the SJDA is open to any designer that has experimented with new technologies of generative AI to inspire or create jewellery designs. While it is not expected that these designs will be manufactured, they should be feasible to realise without significant design changes if they were to be manufactured.

TARGET RETAIL SELLING PRICE 
Jewellery pieces submitted in this category should be sold for no more than USD$12,000 
Your selection of materials should reflect this cap and general target price.

GENERATIVE TOOLS
Images submitted in this category can be completely or partially produced by AI. Examples of complete AI creation include prompting of Stable Diffusion, MidJourney or other diffusion models. Partial production examples include the use of existing images or elements, supplemented with generative fills or tools in programs such as Photoshop, Firefly, etc.

MATERIALS
The ‘Artificially Exquisite’ category has no restrictions on materials or manufacturing as it requires the submission of a single photograph or design created, with the assistance of Artificial Intelligence tools, by the designer.

THEME
The competition theme must be evident in the submission and should be explained.

NUMBER OF SUBMISSIONS
The nature of generative AI involved many variations. You should select your best concept/generation for submission. No more than three submissions will be allowed from any one participant.

CRITERIA
In this category, entrants are encouraged to take into consideration:

Conceptual innovation,
Designers are encouraged to explore and push the limits of traditional jewellery concepts and materials. While designs should be rooted in reality, this judging criterial will reward more creative thinking.

Effective use of AI technology,
Judges will consider the integration of AI technology into the jewellery design process. Designers who use specific AI algorithms, machine learning techniques, customized models or creatively integrate AI tools and human design stages to enhance the design process will be recognised in this criterion.

Overall Aesthetic Appeal,
Judges will evaluate the visual impact and aesthetic appeal of the AI-generated jewellery design submissions. Considering factors such as composition, color harmony, balance, and overall visual attractiveness.

DOCUMENTATION

Participants must provide a detailed explanation of the AI tools, techniques or algorithms used in their design process. This can include information on the prompts used, models selected, any training information, process steps or any other relevant technical details. The details will help judges evaluate the submission but will not be shared publicly. Limit the documentation to less than 200 words.

ORIGINALITY

Designs should be original and not infringe upon any existing copyrights or trademarks. It is understood that some models may not provide detailed information about the origins of training data used to produce them, but participants should not explicitly train on copyrighted materials. Participants should also avoid using pre-existing AI-generated designs to ensure uniqueness.

MANUFACTURING PRACTICICALITY 

Judges will evaluate: 

  • Practicality, wearability, and aesthetics of each design, focusing on its manufacturability based on the submitted specifications.   
  • As mentioned, ergonomic factors, specifically weight and size, will be considered.  
  • Designs should ideally include clear representations from multiple angles. 
  • Our manufacturing sponsors may adjust the size of the chosen design in accordance with the stated budge

General Terms & ConDITIONS

APPLICATION

Each entry should be submitted electronically together with a duly completed application form.

The application form must include information for all required fields, including a description of the sizes, material(s) and technique(s) used and a brief description summarising the design style compelling storyline in a maximum of 200 words.

All entry forms must be completed in English. Design descriptions will NOT form a part of the judging criteria and will be used solely for the purposes of providing supporting information about the design and its designer to the public.

SUBMISSION OF DESIGNS

All designs must be submitted electronically via the Singapore Jewellery Design Award’s web-based submission page. Submissions may include scans of physical drawings or computer aided design renderings.

All designs must include:

  • Jewellery Without Limits
    • Illustration(s) or rendering(s) of design
    • Photograph(s) of finished jewellery pieces (if the item has been produced)
  • Essence of Gold
    • Illustration(s) or rendering(s) of design
    • Technical drawing of design consisting of at least a top and one side view in 1:1 Scale
  • Fresh Facets
    • Illustration(s) or rendering(s) of design
    • Technical drawing of design consisting of at least a top and one side view in 1:1 Scale
  • Exquisite AI
    • AI generated or AI-assisted computer images of a single jewellery concept

For Scans of Physical Drawings

  • Dimensions A4 size (297mmx210mm)
  • Minimum scan resolution: 200dpi
  • File Type: File Type PNG / PDF / JPG
  • File Size no more than 5MB

For Computerised Designs

  • Dimensions: Minimum 1080 pixels on largest side
  • File Type: PNG / PDF / JPG
  • File Size: no more than 5MB
  • *Computerised design finalists of the Fresh Facets category will be asked to submit a 3D Model in STL Format
 

For AI generated designs

  • Dimensions: 512 pixels on smallest
  • File Type: PNG / JPG / MP4
  • File Size: no more than 5MB

Individual submissions are limited to 5 uploads per submission.
If you are submitting more than one design, please submit each one individually as a separate application. Individual entries consisting of DIFFERENT designs will be automatically disqualified.

To preserve the integrity of the judging process, no identifying features of name, logo, or trademark on any entry is allowed. After judging has been completed, all designs will be properly credited in any public display.

 

COSTS OF PARTICIPATION

SJDA DOES NOT charge a participation fee.

Winners will be invited to participate in awards activities and press events in Singapore, as well as to optionally manufacture their winning designs or exhibit their winning collections.

Neither SJDA nor any of its organizer,  supporting partners or sponsors shall bear any cost associated with individual’s participation in these activities including but not limited to:

  • Any form of travel expense, air or otherwise
  • Any form of lodging expense in Singapore or while in transit
  • Commercial insurance on jewellery being transported, stored or exhibited at SIJE or to the sponsoring manufacturer.

JUDGING

Entries for SJDA will be evaluated anonymously, impartially and ethically against the criteria described in each category as well as using the judges own subjective impressions of aesthetic appeal and uniqueness.

The decision of the panel of Judges will be final and is not subject to dispute or appeal.

 

PUBLIC VOTING

SJDA Incorporates a public voting component that does not influence the competition results and takes place after formal judging and decisions have been completed.

  • Submissions to the public competition are rated by members of the general public via social media channels such as facebook, instagram or twitter. Winners will be determined by the number of qualifying votes cast for their designs.
  • There will be no cash prize for public voting awards.
  • Participants are free to share their submissions with friends and family via social media.
  • Competition organizers may advertise or promote the competition via whatever channels they see fit; said promotion may include the latest competition submissions, the top submissions or any other representative sample of submissions selected at the discretion of the organizers.
  • Only finalist and semi-finalist contestants will be included in the public voting activities
  • Where multiple images are uploaded, only ONE image’s votes will be counted (ie: contestants with multiple views or multiple items will not receive the sum of the votes for all the photos submitted)

 

DISQUALIFICATION

  • In order to be displayed on public voting platforms, designs must qualify for one of the SJDA categories.
  • In order to qualify as a public vote, votes must come from individuals with valid social media accounts; those individuals must not be paid for their votes. Participants who boost posts, or otherwise pay for votes or views may be disqualified at the sole discretion of the organizers. Such disqualifications shall not be subject to appeal, the Organizers will not entertain discussion or correspondence related to disqualification due to the use of suspected false accounts or paid promotion.

 CHANGES TO DESIGNS OR ENTRY DETAILS

Once submitted, no application may be modified until the final selection process.

Finalists will be contacted before the announcement of the winning pieces to review their application details.

After the winning designs have been selected by the final judging panel, no changes to application details will be accepted for any reason.

COMPETITION RESTRICTIONS

Submissions should be original work and should NOT have won prizes or placed as finalists in other local or international competitions.

Should submitted designs be found to be copies or imitations of existing works, they will be disqualified. Participants must affirm that their designs are entirely their original creations, conceived by them, and do not incorporate, replicate, or be derived from another designer’s work or any previously published material.

Submissions are not required to be created solely for the purpose of this competition; hence participants may submit their existing commercial designs for consideration, provided the designs meet the category and competition criteria.

There are limits on the number of submissions per individual and category, the same design may only be submitted for ONE category.

Participants may choose to submit different designs for a single category or any combination of multiple categories.

Participants may submit multiple designs within a single category or any combination of multiple categories. All categories may make use of technologies that incorporate AI assisted steps into their process, but may be disqualified or moved to the AI category if the designer’s own creative contribution (beyond prompting) is not made apparent. Fully AI-generated designs (such as designs formed from text-to-image prompting, or image-based prediction where source images/shapes/control-nets were not the intellectual property of the designer) MUST be submitted exclusively under the Exquisite AI category only. Any entries suspected of being AI-generated and which do not have any supporting images or information to show an original human IP will be re-classified into the Exquisite AI category without notice.

Employees of the sponsoring companies may not enter the competition.

RECOGNITION AND AWARDS 

Designers participating in the competition on behalf of a company should be aware that recognition will be granted exclusively to the individual designer, as the award is specifically intended to honour individual achievements. The company that the designer represents will not receive direct recognition in the form of an award. However, SJDA may acknowledge the company by listing its name alongside the designer’s name, where appropriate, to credit the company’s involvement in the designer’s work.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, PHOTOGRAPHY AND PUBLICITY

Submissions to the Singapore Jewellery Design Awards do not impact ownership of the designer’s or company’s original intellectual property.

SJDA shall arrange websites, emails, printed materials and official displays of submissions and winning pieces.

By submitting a design to the SJDA, any and all rights to the display of these designs, depictions, photography, prototypes or models in the use and context of the SJDA is waived in entirety and perpetuity.

SJDA, its organizer, supporting partners and sponsors  will retain the rights to reproduce any and all SJDA resources in the style and manner to be determined at their sole discretion, and without seeking approval of the applicant or winner, provided this remains within the scope of promoting the SJDA, its participants, winners or achievements.

SJDA, its organizer, supporting partners and sponsors will use reasonable endeavours to promote appropriate coverage of the winning pieces in the consumer and trade press internationally and by entering the competition you agree to this.  However, the extent of the coverage remains under the editorial control of the local media.

For the sake of clarity, neither SJDA nor its supporting partners (save manufacturing sponsor) will use the intellectual property of the competition applicants for commercial sale in any form. The competitions Manufacturing Sponsor/s will not use the intellectual property of the competition applicants without prior written agreement between the parties outlining the limitations (duration, exclusivity in Singapore) and terms (licence fee payable in case of sale) of such use.

MANUFACTURING SPONSORS AND COMMERCIALIZATION

Summary

Winners or finalists will be invited to manufacture their winning designs for exhibition at the Singapore International Jewelry Expo. Designers unable to organize their own manufacturing may be contacted by the competition manufacturing sponsor if they willing to manufacture the jewellery.

Winning pieces may be sold by the manufacturer at the jewellery show and/or in their own showroom. Where a manufacturing sponsor offers to produce a design for/after the competition, they shall have the full discretion to set the selling price of the piece and shall, upon sale of the design, compensate the designer for their intellectual property.

Should the sponsoring manufacturer recycle or re-purpose the jewellery piece or be unable to sell the piece for a period exceeding 1 year, no fee shall be payable to the award winner.

Selection & Manufacturing Rights
Winners in sponsored design categories may be invited to enter into a Manufacturing Agreement with a designated sponsor. Participation is entirely at the sponsor’s discretion. SJDA does not require, mandate, or guarantee manufacturing of any design.

If a designer is not selected for manufacturing, their win status and exhibition rights remain unchanged. Designers may manufacture winning designs independently at any time.

Compensation Structure
If a designer is selected for manufacturing, compensation shall be:

Units 1-5: 8% of Net Sales or $800 USD (whichever is lower)
Units 6-10: 5% of Net Sales or $300 USD (whichever is lower)
Units 11+: 3% of Net Sales

Net Sales = Final retail price minus sales taxes, legitimate returns, and discounts up to 10%.

Payment only occurs if and when pieces are sold to end customers. No sale = No payment. Compensation is calculated based on a timeframe specified in the manufacturer’s agreement with the designer.

Manufacturing Term
Manufacturing rights are exclusive for 18 months from the award announcement or first manufacturing date, whichever is later. After 18 months, all rights automatically revert to the designer, who may manufacture and commercialize the design independently with no further obligations.

Designer Representations
By competing in sponsored categories, designers warrant that:

  • The design is original and does not infringe third-party intellectual property
  • Designer has full authority to grant manufacturing rights
  • Designer shall indemnify the sponsor against any IP infringement claims

 

SJDA Non-Involvement
SJDA is not a party to any manufacturing agreement and shall have no involvement in:

  • Manufacturing quality, timelines, or processes
  • Production decisions or supplier selection
  • Product defects, recalls, or customer complaints
  • Pricing, marketing, or sales decisions
  • Any disputes between designer and sponsor

SJDA will not mediate or arbitrate any manufacturing disputes. All disputes shall be resolved directly between designer and sponsor under the laws of Singapore.

Full Manufacturing Agreement
Designers selected for manufacturing must sign a separate Manufacturing Agreement with the sponsor detailing compensation, payment terms, IP rights, audit rights, and termination provisions. The Manufacturing Agreement is the controlling document for all manufacturing matters and supersedes any conflicting language in these T&Cs.

GRAND PRIZE CONDITIONS

GRAND PRIZE: Description

The first prize for the Jewellery Without Limits Category  consists of a return economy-class air ticket, accommodation, local ground transport related to the VO event, and participation in VO activities as determined by IEG and SJDA (collectively, the “Grand Prize”).
The Grand Prize is personal to the Winner and is non‑transferable, non‑exchangeable and has no cash or credit alternative, in whole or in part, under any circumstances.

GRAND PRIZE: Travel and visa obligations

The Winner is solely responsible for obtaining, at their own cost, all required travel documents, including a valid passport (with at least six months’ validity from date of travel), visas, transit visas and any other entry permissions or authorisations required to attend VO.
IEG, SJDA and all related sponsors make no commitment, representation or warranty that the Winner will be granted any visa or entry permission; such decisions rest entirely with the relevant authorities.
If the Winner is unable to obtain all necessary travel documents and permissions, or fails to provide satisfactory written proof of these (including booked travel dates) at least one (1) month before the scheduled departure date, the Prize (including any travel and accommodation) shall be deemed forfeited with no substitution, compensation, reimbursement or cash value.

GRAND PRIZE: Forfeiture and no‑show scenarios

The Grand Prize (or any unused portion) will be automatically forfeited, with no replacement or cash value, if the Winner:

  • is unable to travel for any reason, including but not limited to visa refusal, delay in visa issuance, passport issues, personal commitments, illness, or financial constraints; or is refused boarding by the airline, denied entry or removed from any country by immigration or border authorities; or
  • fails to present themselves for any flight, check‑in, accommodation, or transfer at the advised time for any reason (including late arrival at the airport); or
  • otherwise cannot attend VO for any reason whatsoever.

    In all such circumstances, IEG and SJDA will have no obligation to:

  • provide an alternative prize;
  • rebook or reschedule flights, accommodation or transfers;
  • or refund, reimburse or pay any amount in cash or kind.

 

GRAND PRIZE: Flights, accommodation and logistics

All travel logistics (including airline selection, flight routing, travel dates, accommodation, and transfers related to official VO activities) will be arranged at the sole discretion of IEG and/or its appointed agents.
The Winner shall have no right to request or insist on:

  • a particular airline, flight routing, seat class, or schedule;
    changes to the booked flights or accommodation; or
  • upgrades, extensions, stopovers or any other itinerary modifications.

Any changes requested by the Winner that are, in IEG’s sole discretion, exceptionally accommodated will be entirely at the Winner’s own risk and expense, and may be subject to additional fees charged directly by airlines, hotels, or service providers.

GRAND PRIZE: Winner conduct and promotional duties

As a condition of accepting the travel and accommodation sponsorship of the Grand Prize, the Winner must:

  • attend VO at the dates and venue specified by IEG; and
  • be present and participate, in a professional manner, in all SJDA‑related promotional, media and publicity activities at VO reasonably requested by SJDA and/or IEG, including but not limited to photoshoots, interviews, panel appearances and social media content.

The Winner grants SJDA, IEG and their partners a royalty‑free, worldwide, irrevocable licence to use the Winner’s name, image, likeness, voice, design(s) and statements for marketing, promotional, PR and documentation purposes in any media, without further compensation.

LIABILITY AND SPONSOR PROTECTION

To the maximum extent permitted by law, IEG, SJDA and all related sponsors, partners and agents shall not be liable for:

  • any failure of the Winner to obtain visas, entry permissions or travel documents;
  • any decision of immigration, customs, security or airline staff;
    any costs, losses, damages or expenses (including missed flights, alternative travel, additional accommodation, insurance, medical expenses or loss of income) incurred by the Winner in relation to the Prize or the VO trip.
  • any decision by banks, financial intermediaries or any other parties to the transfer of funds are unable to initiate or complete the transfer of any cash prizes. Transfers rejected, flagged or otherwise stalled or withheld shall be considered forfeit.

If, due to events beyond the reasonable control of IEG or SJDA (including but not limited to government restrictions, visa or entry restrictions, travel bans, airline cancellations, event cancellation or force majeure), the Prize cannot be fulfilled as described, IEG and SJDA reserve the right to:

  • cancel or amend the Prize; or
  • substitute an alternative benefit,
  • and in all such cases the Winner will have no right to claim additional compensation or cash in lieu

 

 CANCELLATION OF THE COMPETITION

Singapore Jewellery Design Award reserves the right to cancel the competition at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside of its control.

 

ACCEPTANCE OF RULES

Entrants must comply with all the above-mentioned rules and are deemed to have accepted and agreed to them when entering into the competition.

PRIVACY AND DATA PROTECTION

By registering and participating in the competition, you agree and consent to SJDA (including its related corporations/stakeholders), as well as its representatives and/or agents collecting, using, disclosing and sharing amongst themselves your personal data, and disclosing such Personal Data to their authorised service providers and relevant third parties relevant to this award competition. You acknowledge and agree that your personal data and submissions may be stored and processed by SJDA for the stated purposes.


INTERNATIONAL COMPLIANCE

Singapore Jewellery Design Award (SJDA) strictly adheres to international laws and regulations, including those related to financial transactions and sanctions imposed by Singapore, the European Union, the United Nations, and other international bodies. Consequently, we regret to inform potential participants that we are unable to issue cash prizes or conduct financial transactions with individuals or entities from countries currently subject to such financial sanctions. This includes, but is not limited to, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, the Crimean region of Ukraine and any other country facing similar restrictions under international or Singapore law. By participating in SJDA, you acknowledge and agree to this limitation. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in complying with these mandatory legal obligations.
